Prayagraj: UP’s Prayagraj police have detained 10 persons for allegedly selling blood plasma to dengue patients’ families as platelets.

The arrests took place in the midst of another instance in the city where a hospital is accused of giving sweet lime (mosambi) juice passed off as platelets to a dengue patient who later died. These ten guys, according to the police, were allegedly stealing platelets from blood banks and repackaging plasma from blood banks; while both are blood constituents, platelets are highly sought after in dengue instances and utilised to treat other illnesses.

There has been a sharp rise in number of dengue cases

“We questioned these men about gangs in Prayagraj possibly passing off juice as platelets, but they said that wasn’t happening — rather, blood plasma is being passed off as platelets,” said the district police chief, Shailesh Pandey.

“Dengue has spread a lot in the recent days, shooting up the demand for platelets. That’s what these men were taking advantage of that and defrauding mostly poor people,” said the officer.

Twelve people, according to Mr. Pandey, were recently detained for allegedly providing blood in Prayagraj in an unauthorised way. A video of the alleged event that included the “juice” allegation went viral, leading to the hospital’s closure. Pradeep Pandey, the patient, was transferred to a different hospital, where he passed away when his health deteriorated, according to officials.

The local police station has received a FIR in relation to the incident. After receiving three units of platelets by transfusion, the patient experienced a response, according to the proprietor of the private hospital, who also claimed that the platelets had come from a separate shop.
