Rahul Gandhi’s convoy vehicles crash on Purvanchal Expressway Vehicles crash suddenly on Purvanchal Expressway. The accident happened on October 26 (Monday) when the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha was on his way from Lucknow to Sultanpur, where his court appearance was scheduled. Reportedly, many people, including Congress workers and security personnel, were injured in the mishap, and Gandhi was safe. The eyes are on the movement of the Congress leader and his security.

What happened on Purvanchal Expressway?

The accident took place at about the 91st kilometer in the Haliyapur area of Sultanpur district. Media reports said that the convoy consisting of five vehicles hit an ambulance. There are reports that a vehicle ahead of the convoy braked suddenly, forcing the vehicles following to collide into each other. While this is being reported as the sequence of events that caused the accident, officials will need to confirm it. The effect also caused damage to a few vehicles and among those reportedly injured were workers of Congress, party office bearers, and security personnel. Earlier, it was reported that Rahul Gandhi was safe and the convoy moved on towards Sultanpur.

Why was Rahul Gandhi on the way to Sultanpur?

Rahul Gandhi was on his way to Sultanpur to appear before a special MP-MLA court in connection with a 2018 defamation case. The suit, filed by BJP MLA Vijay Mishra, pertains to alleged comments Gandhi made about former BJP chief Amit Shah. The court was to pronounce its verdict in the case on October 26. Gandhi had reached Lucknow airport this morning before proceeding towards Sultanpur.

Why has the incident raised eyebrows?

An accident involving vehicles following the Leader of the Opposition by virtue of the office of the occupant and its security protocol, like the one this morning, would have naturally been of public interest. But the issue must be evaluated on the facts of the case and not on the political conjecture. The main concerns now are the fate of the injured and the reasons that led to the crash and whether any alteration is necessary in the convoy movement or road-safety regime.
