Rahul Gandhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, currently under fire for his remarks he made in London on India's democracy, clarified his stand at a Parliament panel. He was attending a consultative committee meeting on India's G-20 Presidency chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Sources said Rahul Gandhi clarified his remarks made during his recent visit to London and said he did not ask any other country to intervene.

The Wayanad MP said in London he only raised questions about India's democracy and told those present there that he believes this is an internal matter and they will solve it.

BJP called him anti-national

Rahul Gandhi further said that he did not speak in a manner that the BJP claimed he did, and called him an "anti-national".

“Chaired the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for External Affairs on India’s G20 Presidency. Thank members for their active participation,” the minister said in a tweet.

Rahul Gandhi did not comment during the opening session of the meeting. However, later, he expressed his views on various topics which were interrupted by BJP MPs.

BJP MPs interrupted Rahul Gandhi and countered him. They said this was not the appropriate platform to speak on this topic. This led to a heated argument between the Congress MP and the BJP MPs.

EAM tells Rahul to speak on topic

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who chaired the committee, interrupted Rahul Gandhi and said that he should speak only on the subject. Earlier, BJP MPs also said that many people are trying to divert attention from India's chairmanship of the G20.

The BJP MPs said that many people were trying to divert attention from the topic of India's G-20 presidency when discussions were going on, adding that the emergency was the biggest blot on India's democracy.

Rahul answered that some MPs spoke out of context and he would answer all of them. EAM Jaishankar interrupted him and said that the subject of the meeting should be discussed and not only political topics. The foreign affairs minister also told him that whatever he wants to speak, he can say in Parliament.

Those who attended the consultative committee meeting, included Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, Trinamool Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi. BJP MPs GVL Narasimha Rao, Dt Rajdeep Roy, Mahesh Jethmalani and Anil Firojia also attended the meeting. Senior MEA officials were also present at the meeting.
