According to Rahul Gandhi, the new bills introduced by the ruling party represent a serious rollback of democratic values. He argued that instead of strengthening Parliament, empowering states, and protecting citizens’ rights, the government is attempting to centralize authority and weaken opposition voices.
“India fought hard to break away from feudal systems and autocratic rule, but these bills are pushing us back into an age of absolute control—almost like the medieval era,” he said during the heated debate.
Opposition’s Broader Stand
Rahul Gandhi’s remarks come at a time when multiple opposition leaders have raised concerns about the government’s approach to lawmaking. Many of them argue that the ruling party has been passing crucial bills without thorough debate or consultation, undermining the role of Parliament as the highest democratic forum.
The Congress leader emphasized that democracy thrives on checks and balances, transparency, and accountability. By limiting discussions and rushing bills through Parliament, Gandhi said, the government is setting a dangerous precedent that could harm India’s long-term democratic health.

Rahul Gandhi’s choice of a black T-shirt was symbolic, representing resistance against what he called authoritarian tendencies. Many Congress MPs joined him in the protest, signalling united opposition to the government’s legislative approach.
