The Territorial Army (TA) will be sending female officers to its engineer regiments along the Line of Control (LoC), according to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
According to organisational requirements, he has also approved the hiring of women officers as staff officers at the directorate general of TA in New Delhi and the headquarters of the TA group, the defence ministry announced on Sunday.
Since 2019, the Territorial Army has started appointing female officers to its regiment of railway engineers, oil sector units, and ecological task force units. According to the defence ministry, "it has been decided to extend the scope of further employment for women officers in TA based on the experience gained during this period.
In line with the TA's citizen-soldier concept, officers get annual training in basic military abilities while continuing to hold lucrative employment in civilian life.
It stated that the progressive policy action aims to both meet and expand the career opportunities for female officers. "They will now serve and train under the same conditions as their male counterparts in a wider range of units and appointments," the ministry stated.
For women officers of the TA, the Department of Military Affairs has approved changes to the current cadre management requirements.
“Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the posting of women officers of the Territorial Army with engineer regiments of the TA along the Line of Control and as staff officers at TA group headquarters/ directorate general of Territorial Army at New Delhi, as per organisational requirement,” the ministry said.
