Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles has expressed deep condolences and solidarity with India following the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists. Marles extended heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the Australian government, stating that their “thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this horrific attack.”
Marles emphasised that Australia stands firmly with India in the global fight against terrorism. “We want to make it absolutely clear—Australia is united with India and all nations in tackling terrorism in all its forms,” he said.
Strengthening Strategic Ties
Highlighting the progress made in bilateral defence cooperation, Marles called the prospect of working with India over the next three years “truly exciting.” He acknowledged the significant strides made in Australia-India ties, especially in strategic and military domains, over the past few years.
He also noted the importance of respecting India's leadership in maintaining peace and stability in the region. “We accept the cessation of military activities as an initiative of Indian leadership,” he said, adding that Australia will continue to engage constructively with India on all fronts, including counterterrorism.
A Unified Stand Against Terrorism
The statement comes at a time when international support for India is growing in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, a precision military response by India following the April 22 Pahalgam attack. Marles' remarks reinforce the global understanding that terrorism remains a shared threat and needs collaborative efforts to counter.
As India continues to bolster its national security and infrastructure, such as the inauguration of the world’s highest Chenab Railway Bridge and the first-ever Vande Bharat train to Kashmir, strategic allies like Australia are reaffirming their commitment to shared democratic values and regional security.
