Remembering Kargil hero Captain Vikram Batra on his death anniversary

Captain Vikram Batra of 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles laid down his life to Capture Point 4875 during the Kargil War on July 7 1999. He was later awarded Param Vir Chakra for his valiant sacrifice and immense courage. The capturing of point 8475 was a significant point in the conflict that allowed Indian forces to advance their position in the war. Vikram Batra hailed from Ghaggar village near Palampur in Himachal Pradesh. Born on September 9 1974, Batra is remembered for heroic courage displayed in the multiple operations of Kargil War. His catchphrase ‘yeh dil mange more’ has been immortalized in the country’s memory.

Military Career

Vikram Batra joined Indian Military Academy in 1996 in the Manekshaw Battalion. After his training Batra was commissioned into 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles as part of the Jessore Company of the Manekshaw Battalion. His first posting was in Sopore of Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir. During his posting he led multiple operations against militants in the area. He received he Instructor’s Grade during his tenure on a Commando Course at Belgaum in Karnataka. Lieutenant Vikram Batra had received orders for his transfer to Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh but it was cancelled due to outbreak of war with Pakistan.

He quickly rose through the ranks and was made Captain during the Kargil War. Captain Batra’s Delta company completed the capture of peak 5140 on June 19, 1999 after repelling the Pakistani forces. After this victory he was given command to capture Point 4875. Batra’s men advanced towards peak in the night of July 7 but bad weather and foggy conditions proved to be a substantial hindrance. The forces made it to the top and Batra was severely injured when attempting to rescue another officer. Batra succumbed to his wounds and Indian forces captured Point 4875 on morning of July 8.

Legacy

Captain Vikram Batra was one of the 4 soldiers to receive Param Vir Chakra for his services in the Kargil War. His valour and heroic actions have made him big inspiration for Indian youth especially ones who wish to or serve in the Indian Army. Vikaram Batra’s war slogan Yeh Dil Maange More is very popular among Indian masses.
“Either I will come back after hoisting the Tricolor, or I will come back wrapped in it, but I will be back for sure.” These lines from Vikram Batra is the best description of his courage and life’s purpose that he selflessly served. Vikram Batra is an inspiration for the masses and his sacrifice has gone down as one of the most courageous display of valour by an Indian army personnel.

The movie titled ‘Shershah’ released in 2021 was based on the life of Captain Vikram Batra. The role of Batra was essayed by Siddharth Malhotra.
