Republic Day 2023: On Wednesday, leading up to the Republic Day 2023 celebration, the government made a noteworthy announcement regarding the Padma Awards. President Droupadi Murmu authorised the awarding of 106 Padmas on Wednesday, including three duo cases for 2023.

The list includes 91 Padma Shri awards, nine Padma Bhushan awardees, and six Padma Vibhushan awardees. There are 19 female award recipients in total, as well as two people from the foreigner/NRI/PIO/OCI and seven posthumous award recipients categories.

The esteemed Padma Vibhushan in the field of medicine will be bestowed posthumously to the renowned ORS pioneer, Dilip Mahalanabis. The oral rehydration solution, developed by Mahalanabis, is credited with saving an astounding 5 crore lives globally. The 25 recipients of the Padma Shri award include unsung heroes Munishwar Chander Dawar, Hirabai Lobi, and Ratan Chandra Kar.

ORS Legend Mahalanabis and his legacy

As per the government’s list of 2023 Padma winners, Mahalanabis, who returned from the USA to participate in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, is acknowledged for his exceptional contribution to prove the effectiveness of ORS while working in refugee camps during that period.

The Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan are the two highest civilian honours given in the Indian Republic.

He is one of six people who have received the Padma Vibhushan honour; five others legendary figures have the awards for their commitment to public service. Among them are Mulayam Singh Yadav (posthumously) in public affairs, S M Krishna in public affairs, Zakir Hussain in art, Balkrishna Doshi (posthumously) in architecture, and Srinivas Varadhan in science and engineering.

The selection process for the Padma Shri award included 91 other public servants. Among them are Tula Ram Upreti, a 98-year-old self-sufficient small farmer who practises organic farming using only traditional methods, Ratan Chandra Kar, a doctor who helped the Jarawa tribe of the Andaman Islands by uplifting and treating them, Hirabai Lobi, a tribal social worker and leader who has devoted her life to helping the Siddi community in Gujarat, and others.

Padma awards are granted in three categories and announced annually on the eve of Republic Day: Padma Vibhushan (for extraordinary and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher degree), and Padma Shri (distinguished service). The prize aims to honour accomplishments across all professions or activities where there is a part of public service.
