Road Travel Set to Revolutionise! Nitin Gadkari Announces End of Toll Booths, New System to Come in Place

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the switch from traditional toll booths to a satellite-based toll collection system.

Nitin Gadkari: Minister of Union Road Transport Nitin Gadkari provided information about tolls and announced that the government intends to do away with them shortly. Its position will be taken by a new system. This information was provided by the Union Minister on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.

Introduction of Satellite-Based Toll Collection System

Soon, a new satellite-based toll collection system will be operational. But no timeframe has been made public as of yet. Users will pay the same toll tax under this arrangement based on the number of kilometres they drive on the roadway. The bank account will be immediately withdrawn to cover this toll tax. Users will also be able to save money thanks to this.

NHAI’s Plan to Implement New Toll Collection System

The National Hive Authority of India (NHAI) intends to implement the new system by March 2024, according to a statement made by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in early December. It will shorten the time spent at the toll plaza.

The FASTag system is currently in place for paying tolls. The automated toll plazas accept payments for toll taxes through an electronic toll collection system. With its assistance, the average wait time at toll plazas has decreased from 714 seconds to 47 seconds currently.

Understanding FASTag

The electronic toll collection system is called Fastag. Its Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology enables it to pay tolls at toll plazas automatically. It is mounted on a car’s or other vehicle’s windscreen.
