This is one issue that is causing political waves to roll throughout the country because the general secretary of RSS, Dattatreya Hosabale, has landed himself in hot water over his words, as he recently said that the purposes of secularism and socialism in the Constitution of India were irrelevant. According to DNP India, Hosabale said that words such as 'secular' and 'socialist' were introduced into the Preamble with no need, and there is no guarantee that they are in the civilizational ethos of India.
This remark has sparked off a political firestorm, particularly as elections to the Bihar Assembly approach. The oppositionist parties have taken the privilege of accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of promoting a majoritarian and anti-constitutional vision since the BJP sees itself as ideologically close to the RSS.
Congress, RJD, and left party leaders have condemned the recent statement of Dattatreya Hosabale on secularism and socialism, claiming that this leader attacks the very basis of the Indian Constitution. According to them, these utterances are part of the desire to degrade the values that characterize the Republic. Political analysts are also of the opinion that this may prove to be a political gaffe, especially in Bihar, where voters are caste-sensitive as well as socially diverse. The BJP leaders have not yet reacted to this issue officially, but several BJP insiders assert that they are trying to extricate themselves from this controversy so that the controversy does not grow because of the election campaign.
There can be no better timing for the comment made by Hosabale. Caste combinations are realigning, and in Bihar, minority votes have proven to be crucial; in this context, making such a statement can backfire on the party. Leaders in the opposition are queuing up to ask the BJP to explain its position on the constitutional principles.
Amid rising political rhetoric, this episode could define a decisive moment between the BJP and its ideology and electoral strategy.
