Russia Refers To India As ‘Worthy Candidate’ For UNSC Permanent Membership

UNSC: During the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov supported India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNGA).

Russian FM Sergey Lavrov spoke to the UNGA session and stated that his nation views India as a “important international actor” and a “deserving candidate for permanent membership within the Council.”

As important global players and deserving contenders for permanent membership in the Council, Lavrov noted that Brazil and India in particular have raised the profile of Africa unilaterally and compelledly.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that Moscow sees the possibility of making the Security Council more democratic, specifically, through extending the representation of countries from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He was speaking at the 77th UN General Assembly on the Russia-Ukraine war.

Russian-Ukrainian war must be ended diplomatically, said External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in his speech to the high-level UN General Assembly (UNGA) session at the UN. Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar stated that India is and would continue to be firmly on the side of peace.

In a previous statement, the government claimed that India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC) had received support from four of the UNSC’s five permanent members.

V Muraleedharan, the minister of state for external affairs, responded to a query by saying that China and India have been discussing UNSC reform on a regular basis. China is the only nation that has not yet backed India’s application to join the UNSC.
