Sanchar Saathi App: Government Withdraws Mandatory Pre-Installation Rule Amid Rising Voluntary Adoption

The ministry noted that the aim was never enforcement, but empowerment—making cybersecurity accessible to all.

Government Withdraws Mandatory Pre-Installation Rule Amid Rising Voluntary Adoption

The Ministry of Communications stated that the app was originally mandated to ensure wider access to cybersecurity tools, especially for users who may not be aware of digital threats. The Sanchar Saathi app helps citizens report cyber fraud, detect misuse of their mobile connections, and stay safe from malicious actors.

Officials reiterated that the app has no hidden functions apart from user protection, and that citizens can uninstall it at any time. The clarification comes in response to concerns raised by some user groups and industry players.

The rapid increase in voluntary usage played a key role in the government’s decision

According to the Ministry, 1.4 crore citizens have already downloaded the app, contributing to data on nearly 2,000 fraud incidents reported every day. The platform has seen a sharp rise in registrations—6 lakh downloads in a single day, marking a tenfold surge in user adoption.

The rapid increase in voluntary usage played a key role in the government’s decision to withdraw the pre-installation mandate for smartphone manufacturers. The ministry noted that the aim was never enforcement, but empowerment—making cybersecurity accessible to all.

The government emphasized that public trust and participation (Jan Bhagidari) are central to the success of Sanchar Saathi, and the current adoption numbers demonstrate citizens’ confidence in the app.

The Department of Telecommunications continues to encourage users to download the app to safeguard themselves from digital frauds and support national cyber hygiene efforts.
