The Supreme Court rejected a petition challenging the Mumbai High Court order by the Maharashtra government and its former home minister Anil Deshmukh, directing a CBI probe into allegations of corruption leveled by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh.

The Supreme Court on Thursday said the allegations of corruption and misconduct by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh against Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh were 'serious' and required an independent inquiry.

Supreme Court Justice SK Kaul said, "The allegations are serious, involving the Home Minister and the Police Commissioner. They are working together until they are separated in a particular position, both holding a fixed post. Shouldn't the CBI investigate the nature of the allegations and the individuals involved require independent investigation. "

The government in its petition had questioned the process of order of inquiry issued by the High Court. In a petition filed on March 25, Singh said that Deshmukh had asked several police personnel, including sacked policeman Sachin Vaze, to recover Rs 100 crore from Mumbai's bars and restaurants.

In addition, he also made allegations of interfering in police matters. However, the minister denied all allegations and resigned from the post following a High Court order citing 'moral' grounds.

During this, former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh told the Supreme Court that oral allegations were made without any basis and I was ordered by the High Court to CBI inquiry without hearing it.

It is noteworthy that the Government of Maharashtra and Anil Deshmukh challenged the order of the Bombay High Court through petitions directing a CBI inquiry into allegations of corruption and misconduct against Deshmukh.

These allegations were made by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh.

The High Court had ordered a CBI inquiry into the allegations on April 5, after which Deshmukh resigned from the post of Home Minister of Maharashtra.
