The Supreme Court Thursday awarded one-year jail term to former Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu in a three-decade-old road rage case. Sidhu has been awarded one-year rigorous imprisonment by the court.
The Supreme Court today allowed a review plea by the victim’s family on the issue of sentence awarded to Sidhu in the 1988 road rage case.
The court had earlier reserved its order on an application seeking to enlarge the scope of notice in the road rage case. The application was also filed in an ongoing review petition.
Mr Sidhu has opposed the plea seeking to enlarge the scope of the road rage case against him citing earlier order of the Supreme Court which held that there was no evidence that the death of the victim was caused by a single blow.
In 2007, the apex court had stayed the conviction of Sidhu and Sandhu in the case, paving the way for him to contest the by-poll for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.

In September 2018, the apex court had agreed to examine a review petition filed by the family members of the deceased.
It was alleged that when they reached the crossing, Gurnam Singh, driving a Maruti car, found the Gypsy in the middle of the road and asked the occupants, Sidhu and Sandhu, to remove the vehicle for their passage. This led to heated exchanges.
The police had claimed that Singh was beaten up by Sidhu who later fled the crime scene. The injured was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
