A second cheetah from Africa has died in India’s Kuno National Park in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. The cause of Uday's death is still unidentified but forest officials promised an autopsy.

Uday was one of 12 cheetahs that the federal government's cheetah rehabilitation effort imported from South Africa in February.

“During a routine check at around 9am [03:30 GMT], Uday was found sitting in a lethargic state,” an official said on Sunday, according to local media reports. “When forest experts approached him, he got up and staggered a bit.”

After two hours, Uday lost consciousness, and he was sent to an isolation ward to receive medical attention.

JS Chauhan, Principal Chief Forest Conservator, claims that Uday passed away on Sunday at around 4 p.m. (10:30 GMT) while receiving treatment.

African cheetahs in India

More than 70 years ago, the Asiatic cheetah subspecies went extinct in India, but this year, cheetahs were brought back into the country as part of a government effort.

Eight Namibian cheetahs, five males and three females, made up the initial group. But on March 27, Sasha, one of them, passed away there from a kidney condition.

“I have no doubt cheetahs will survive. There is no issue,” Chauhan told local media. “The cheetah that died earlier was sick before it was relocated here,” he said. “It had a kidney problem. But we want to know the cause behind the death of this second cheetah.”

He added that he had asked the federal authorities to choose another suitable habitat for large cats.

“It is risky to keep all the cheetahs in one place,” he was quoted as saying.
