Second Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Rake Reaches ICF Chennai, Trial Run to Begin Soon

Both rakes have been built by BEML using ICF’s advanced sleeper train technology, designed for semi-high-speed overnight travel across India.

The second Vande Bharat Sleeper train rake has officially reached the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Manufactured by BEML using ICF’s technology, this marks the completion of two out of the 10 semi-high-speed sleeper trains awarded to BEML. The remaining eight trains are expected to be delivered by the end of the 2025-26 financial year.

Confirming the development, U Subba Rao, General Manager of ICF, told IndianExpress.com,

“Yes, the second Vande Bharat Sleeper rake has been delivered by BEML and it arrived in ICF, Chennai.”

Trial Runs to Commence Soon

The newly delivered rake will soon undergo mandatory trials conducted by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) before its final commissioning.

“The trial run will begin soon. It is an essential step for the train’s final rollout,” Rao added.

The trials will ensure the new sleeper rake meets all performance, safety, and comfort benchmarks before being introduced for public use.

Upgrades in the Second Sleeper Rake

The second Vande Bharat Sleeper features several design improvements based on feedback from the first prototype.
According to officials, major changes include:

  • Enhanced toilets with better fittings and functionality.
  • Improved berths for added passenger comfort.
  • Repositioned fixtures and holding arms for easier use and accessibility.

“Overall, we have come up with a much-improved product,” said the ICF GM.

Launch Plans for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier announced that both Vande Bharat Sleeper trains would be launched simultaneously once the second train is fully ready for service. Both rakes have been built by BEML using ICF’s advanced sleeper train technology, designed for semi-high-speed overnight travel across India.

The new sleeper version is expected to offer passengers luxury, comfort, and speed, setting a new benchmark for long-distance overnight train journeys in the country.
