Shashi Tharoor’s ‘cow hug day’ post creates flutter on social media, centre withdraws directive

A February 6 request from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) urging people to observe February 14 as “CowHug Day” has been withdrawn. Farmers’ organisations and labour activists criticized the request for going against the promotion of scientific temperament.

There was a flood of jokes and memes on social media and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor joined the bandwagon and tweeted his humorous take on the ‘Cow Hug Day’.

He had stated that the “let them hug their guy” instruction may have been misinterpreted as “gaay”.

Tharoor Tweeted,

“Was the Government cow-ed by the jokes made at its expense or was it merely cow-ardice? My guess is the original appeal was an oral instruction: “Valentine’s Day: let them hug their guy” & the last word was misheard by a HindiRashtravadi as gaay,”

The Animal Welfare Board claimed that Vedic traditions are almost “on the verge of extinction” as a result of the “progress of West culture” and that the “dazzle of western civilisation has made our physical culture and heritage almost forgotten” in its appeal to observe “Cow Hug Day” on February 14.

Additionally, it was stated that hugging cows would boost “individual and societal happiness” and emotional richness.
