Shehla Rashid: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) alumna Shehla Rashid has commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for securing a “bloodless” political resolution to the Kashmir dispute. Shehla Rashid responded with “In 2010, yes” when asked if she felt sympathy for the stone throwers.
Gratitude for the Current State
Shehla Rashid elaborated further, telling ANI that she is far more appreciative of the current state of affairs in Kashmir. “…but today when I see, I am much more grateful for today’s situation because today it has become clear that Kashmir is not Gaza,” she remarked.
Denial of Anti-India Slogans
She added, “Kashmir was involved in this back and forth of protests and sporadic incidents of insurgency, infiltrations…somebody needed to break the ice and for that, I would like to credit the present government, especially the prime minister (Narendra Modi), the home minister (Amit Shah), they have ensured a political solution to it which, I would say, is bloodless.” Shehla Rashid also denied the claims made by former student union leaders Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid that in February 2016, “anti-India” slogans were yelled at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. No “anti-India” slogans, like “Bharat tere tukde honge,” were reportedly chanted at the institution, according to Shehla Rashid.
Impact on Personal Lives
Shehla Rashid responded, “It was not just a life changer for the three of us, the entire university sort of suffered the consequences of that incident because there was so much backlash against anything to do with JNU,” when asked how the JNU incident affected her life. She said, “So overnight, from being an elite university the queen of liberal arts, social sciences etc…JNU became a slur..it was almost like a cussword….no such slogans were raised.”
Shehla Rashid’s Perspective on Kashmir
Shehla Rashid, a former student at JNU, has been a vocal opponent of the Narendra Modi-led government in the Central government over the decision to withdraw Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K) special status. However, in recent days, Shehla Rashid has applauded the Centre. Shehla Rashid recently complimented Amit Shah and Prime Minister Modi for securing security and peace in Kashmir for the long run. Her comments came in the wake of Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
