Shivraj Patil: Senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil stirred the hornet’s nest after he made a comment on Jihad. Shivraj Patil claimed that the concept of ‘Jihad’ came from Bhagavad Gita and that it was taught to Arjuna by Lord Krishna.
Patil was attending the book launch event of the biography of Congress leader Mohsina Kidwai when he made this controversial remark. Patil served as the Union Home Minister between 2004-2008 in the UPA government.

Jihad concept
“There is a lot of discussion about Islam. And our work in the Indian Parliament is not about Jihad but ideals. Jihad is only evoked when all efforts, undertaken with a clear mind, fail,” he asserted.
Patil said, “It is said that when all efforts fail, one can use power (Shakti) against the other. There's a lot of discussion on jihad in Islam. Even after all the efforts, if someone doesn't understand the clean idea, power can be used. It's mentioned in Quran and Gita."
"Shri Krishna gave lessons of jihad to Arjuna in a part of Gita in Mahabharat. And Jihad does not exist only in Hindu and Islamic scriptures. It is also present in the Holy text of Christians,” he insinuated.

Patil then justified the concept of Jihad and said, “Despite trying your best, if someone approaches you with weapons, you cannot simply run away…You cannot call it wrong.”
BJP reaction
Reacting strongly to the jihad remarks, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Jai Hind accused the Congress party of "Hindu hatred". Congress opposed the existence of Lord Ram, he said.
He tweeted, "After AAP’s Gopal Italia and Rajendra Pal, not to be outdone in Hindu hatred and votebank politics, Congress’ Shivraj Patil says Shri Krishna taught jihad to Arjun!"
