Smart Cities Mission: The Centre's Smart Cities Mission, which aims to provide residents with improved living conditions, clean and sustainable environments, is set to be completed in 22 cities by the end of March, according to reports. These cities, including Agra, Varanasi, and Chennai, will mark the completion of the projects under the initiative. The remaining 78 cities involved in the mission are expected to be redeveloped within the next three to four months.

100 cities were selected for Smart Cities Mission

The Smart Cities Mission, launched on June 25th, 2015, is a flagship initiative of the Modi government and was created to promote the development of cities with core infrastructure, a clean and sustainable environment, and quality of life for citizens. 100 cities were selected for redevelopment through four rounds of competition between 2016 and 2018.

According to the mission's guidelines, the central government will provide financial support to the tune of ₹48,000 crore over five years, with an average of ₹100 crore per city per year, and an equal amount will be contributed by the state government or urban local body.

Union minister of state for housing and urban affairs, Kaushal Kishore, informed the Rajya Sabha on February 6th that as of January 27th, out of the 7,804 projects worth ₹1,81,322 crore that has been issued work orders in the 100 smart cities, 5,246 projects worth ₹98,796 crores have been completed.

Cities included in the project

The cities set to be renovated under the mission by March include: Bhopal, Indore, Agra, Varanasi, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Coimbatore, Erode, Ranchi, Salem, Surat, Udaipur, Visakhapatnam, Ahmedabad, Kakinada, Pune, Vellore, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Madurai, Amaravati, Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur.
