Snowfall Update: Brace yourselves, residents and travellers of Himachal Pradesh, as a heavy snowfall warning has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the next two days. The Western Disturbance is the cause for these severe weather conditions, and it’s expected to hit the state from today.

Himachal Pradesh Snowfall Update

According to the state Meteorological Centre, the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh will be most affected by the snowfall, and it’s likely to be severe. This means that people living in mountainous regions should prepare for challenging weather conditions, such as heavy snow and poor visibility. It’s advisable to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during this period.

This disturbance will intensify in the state, and the weather will be terrible today in the state. There is a chance of light rain and snowfall in higher reaches in one or two areas. For the districts of Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti, as well as Kullu, IMD has issued a heavy snowfall warning. Kangra, Chamba, Mandi, and Shimla, which are mid-hill districts, will also have one or two bouts of heavy snowfall in upper reaches.

Coldwave intensifies in Jammu & Kashmir

The 40-day-long, very cold Chillai-Kalan, which began on December 21, has gripped Kashmir. It also does not signal the end of the winter. It is followed by the 20-day “Chillai-Khurd” season (between January 30 and February 19) and the 10-day “Chillai-Bachha” (baby cold) period (between February 20 and March 1).

The MeT department further stated, “widespread moderate snow/(rain in Jammu) & moderate to heavy snow over middle and higher reaches of J&K” from today evening to January 25. “On January 26-28th, weather is expected to be partly to generally cloudy with light snow or rain at isolated places.”
