Twitter blue tick: As Twitter removed the blue checkmarks for unpaid subscriptions, several politicians and B-town celebrities lost their verified blue ticks.
Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh besides Yogi Adityanath, Arvind Kejriwal, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have all lost their verified blue ticks. Sports personalities Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Saina Nehwal, Sania Mirza, Rohit Sharma, Sourav Ganguly also lost blue ticks.
Earlier Twitter has announced that it will remove the verified check-mark status of accounts unless they have subscribed to Twitter Blue.
The blue tick served as a way of protecting individuals from impersonation and tackling false information.
Twitter pricing for different regions
Twitter Blue is priced differently for different regions. In the United States, it costs $11 a month or $114.99 a year for iOS or Android users and $8 a month or $84 a year for web users. In India, the price is ₹900 for iOS monthly, web monthly is ₹650 while annual price for iOS is ₹9400. For Android users, monthly pricing is ₹900 while yearly pricing is ₹9,400.
Meanwhile, Twitter shared an update saying, “To remain verified on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue here.”
Twitter owner and CEO Elon Musk earlier said paid verification will generate much-needed revenue for Twitter.
Musk announced in March
In March, Twitter announced, “On April 1st, we will begin winding down our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified checkmarks. To keep your blue checkmark on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue.”
A popup message for some users who still had a blue check indicated that the account “is verified because they are subscribed to Twitter Blue and verified their phone number.” As per Twitter, verifying a phone number simply means that the person has a phone number and they verified that they have access to it — it does not confirm the person’s identity.
It wasn’t just celebrities and journalists who lost their blue checks Thursday. Many government agencies, nonprofits and public-service accounts around the world found themselves no longer verified. This raised concerns that Twitter could lose its status as a platform for getting accurate, up-to-date information from authentic sources, including in emergencies.
