The issue of the release of the convicts of Bilkis Bano, who was gangraped during the Gujarat riots, has reached the Court.
The court has said that the matter will be heard. Chief Justice NV Ramana said, "We will consider listing of the matter." Meanwhile, retired IPS officer Vivek Dubey, who probed the Bilkis Bano case, said the release of the 11 convicts after 14 years showed that they had improved. Along with this, he has also attacked those opposing the release of the convicts. He said that doing so is against the spirit of the Constitution.
Vivek Dubey was the joint director of the CBI, which investigated the Bilkis Bano gang rape case. The Supreme Court had ordered an inquiry into this case. His team had investigated the matter and on the basis of that 12 people were sentenced to life imprisonment. One of the accused had committed suicide. These people included 5 policemen and two doctors. The family members of Bilkis Bano were also murdered in Dahod district during the Gujarat riots. The youngest of these people was the two-year-old daughter of Bilkis Bano. During this, convicts also gang-raped Bilkis Bano when she was pregnant.
Bilkis Bano was left by his rapists thinking that she had died. But she was alive and after regaining consciousness, she asked for clothes from a tribal woman. People have demonstrated in many states of the country including Gujarat for the release of the rapists of Bilkis Bano. Regarding this, Vivek Dubey said, 'It is wrong to protest on this issue on behalf of some people and make statements in the media that this is an insult to justice. It is against the spirit of the Constitution"
