What did Swati Maliwal say?

Swati Maliwal shared that she was sexually assaulted by her father, highlighting the need to address the issue of sexual abuse within families. She stated, “My father used to beat me up a lot. I used to hide under the bed when he came home, I was so scared. At that time, I used to think the whole night about how to empower women against such atrocities. He used to hold my hair and hit my head hard against the wall. But I believe that ignited the determination in me to work for the welfare of the women.”

Swati Maliwal worked as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s advisor before being named head of the Delhi Commission for Women in 2015. The initial period of her appointment as chairwoman was extended. Her previous marriage to Naveen Jaihind, the former leader of the Aam Aadmi Party in Haryana, ended in divorce in 2020.

Swati Maliwal expressed her concerns about the rise in crimes against women in Delhi on social media in January. She said that she had personally inspected the city’s security status at night, but her attempts were rebuffed when an inebriated cab driver forced his hand into the window and dragged her. She called for more aggressive measures to safeguard the safety of women in Delhi on social media by drawing attention to the incident.

BJP’s Khushbu Sundar recalls her experience

Actor-turned-politician BJP’s Khushbu Sundar also said that “I think when a child is abused, it scars the child for life and it’s not about a girl or a boy. My mother has been through the most abusive marriage. A man who probably thought it was his birthright to beat up his wife, beat up his children, sexually abuse his only daughter. When my abuse started I was just 8 years old and I had the courage to speak against him when I was 15.”
