Incessant rain over the weekend has led to a rise in cases of typhoid and upper respiratory infections among people, with experts identifying the elderly and teenagers as the most vulnerable age groups.

Delhi recorded 153 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Sunday, the highest in a single day in July since 1982.

The national capital recorded 107 mm of rainfall till 8.30 am on Monday

Internal medicine specialist and director of CK Birla Hospital, Dr Rajeev Gupta, there has been a sharp increase in patients suffering from upper respiratory infections as well as typhoid and jaundice.

According to him, the number of patients has tripled and mostly children and the elderly are being affected.

He insisted, “Overflow of sewage is the biggest area of concern. The government needs to look into this issue as the water is getting more polluted during the rains.

Agreeing with Gupta in patients of different age groups, Dr Anukalp Prakash, Principal Consultant, Gastroenterology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, stressed that drinking water is a major source of intestinal infection and the sole cause of hepatitis A and E.

The age group which is most prone to such seasonal diseases are children below 15 to 16 years and other senior citizens and elderly patients above 55 to 60 years as their immunity is lower than that of other age groups.
