Tomato at Rs 148/kg in Kolkata, exponential rise in cost in metro cities

Tomato Price Hike: Tomato prices have seen a meteoric rise in the last few days. Tomato, which cost Rs 40–50 per kg a few weeks ago, now costs Rs 130–150. The official data shows that the retail price of tomatoes in India’s major metro areas reached Rs 155 per kg. Kolkata has shown an unprecedented growth in the price of tomato with one Kg costing Rs 148.

Tomato prices on the rise

In major cities, tomatoes are still sold for between Rs. 58 and Rs. 148 per kg at retail prices. Mumbai has the lowest price with one kg costing Rs. 58, while Kolkata has the most with the price of one kg soaring at Rs. 148. Prices for tomatoes are Rs 110 per kg and Rs 117 per kg in Delhi and Chennai, respectively, though they are subject to fluctuation.

What are farmers saying?

Farmers has cited the lack of supply brought on by the extreme heat and the monsoon’s delayed arrival for the increase in tomato prices. The dramatic rise of tomato prices in last few weeks has created a hole in common man’s pocket.

In Delhi, tomatoes for being sold between Rs 120 and Rs 140 per kg, depending on the region and quality. On the other hand, tomatoes cost more than Rs 140 per kg on the online grocery buying platforms Blinkit and Swiggy. After supply from nearby states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana were cut back, the prices have skyrocketed in Delhi.

Due to the lack of harvesting, there has been lack of supply of tomatoes, resulting in exponential rise in prices. However, this rise in price can be perceives as seasonal change as experts believe the price will return to normal in next 15 days.
