Madurai Train Fire: A significant fire broke out on a train at the Madurai railway station in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, resulting in the unfortunate loss of at least nine lives and leaving 20 individuals injured. The Railway authorities have declared a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives.

Details about the Madurai Train Fire incident

The incident occurred around 5:15 a.m. in the compartment, while the train was stationed in the Madurai yard. The fire, which broke out on the train, did not affect the other coaches. Prompt action was taken as fire tenders were quickly deployed, successfully extinguishing the flames by around 7 am. Based on the information provided, around 65 passengers from Lucknow were travelling in the coach that caught fire.

The bodies have been transferred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, and ongoing rescue operations are being conducted. B. Guganesan, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Southern Railway, stated in an official communication that the passengers occupying the coach had unlawfully brought in a gas cylinder, which subsequently triggered the fire. The official clarified that the coach was connected to the Punalur-Madurai Express at Nagercoil Junction on Friday and was then detached after reaching Madurai.

Madurai's District Collector MS Sangeetha said, "Around 5.30 am today, there was a fire in a coach halted here at Madurai railway station. There were pilgrims travelling from Uttar Pradesh in it. When they lit the gas stove to make coffee, the gas cylinder blasted. As of now, we have retrieved nine bodies."

The privately owned compartment had started its journey from Lucknow on August 17, with its destination set for Chennai by the following Sunday. Helpline numbers, 9360552608 and 8015681915, were made available for people to communicate details regarding the fire event and any resulting casualties.
