UK: Tom Tugendhat, the security minister for the United Kingdom, announced increased funding of 95,000 pounds (about Rs 1 crore) to strengthen the country’s capabilities to combat “pro-Khalistan extremism.” In a statement regarding Tugendhat’s three-day visit to India that started on Thursday, the British High Commission notified the public about the choice. The announcement coincides with worries in India regarding pro-Khalistani activity in the UK. After some Khalistani individuals attacked the Indian High Commission in London earlier in March, New Delhi reacted strongly. S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, stated in July that India has asked “partner countries” such the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia not to grant space to Khalistanis.
UK Security Minister Meets Jaishankar, Announces Funding Against ‘Pro-Khalistani Extremism’
To improve bilateral collaboration on the security objectives of the two countries, Tugendhat met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. “During a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, in New Delhi on Thursday, Minister Tugendhat announced new funding to enhance the UK’s capability to tackle Pro-Khalistan Extremism,” the high commission said on Friday, as quoted by news agency PTI. The statement claims that the 95,000-pound investment would help the UK government better grasp the danger posed by “pro-Khalistan extremism” while the collaboration between the UK and India through their joint extremism task force is already in progress. “The living bridge between India and the UK reflects our deep and enduring friendship. As the world’s oldest and largest democracies, we have many shared opportunities to make the world a safer and more prosperous place,” Tugendhat said.
Strong Collaboration to Counter Extremism
“A deeper partnership between our two nations means we can more effectively tackle the security threats we both face. I’m committed to working together to enhance our understanding of and capabilities against extremism –whatever form it takes,” he added, as quoted by PTI. On this matter, British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis said, “Through mechanisms like the Joint Extremism Task Force we are acting jointly on countering threats, including pro-Khalistan extremism, as well as on migration, to keep our people safe.” He claims that the link between the UK and India in terms of migration and mobility is a “pillar of our comprehensive strategic partnership,” which also entails confronting the largest problems with regard to health and the environment and a free and open Indo-Pacific. British officials have emphasised that the security of the building and its workers is of the utmost importance to the UK government in the wake of the attack on the Indian High Commission in London.
UK Security Minister Highlights Importance of G20 Anti-Corruption Meeting
The minister also spoke about the G20 anti-corruption ministerial meeting as he said: “Corruption also harms our prosperity, damages our society, and threatens our national security. I am delighted to be attending the G20 anti-corruption ministerial meeting, presided over by India, to continue strengthening global resilience and cracking down on its corrosive influence.” On Saturday, the G20 summit will be held in Kolkata. The UK Security minister will also stop by the CBI’s headquarters prior to the meeting to talk about how to tackle the shared problems of fraud and child sexual exploitation and abuse. He will meet with Ajit Doval, the national security adviser, according to the UK high commission.
