The government has taken three significant decisions that will facilitate investment in infrastructure and social development during a high-level Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These developments are making the PM-DevINE scheme more powerful: the acceptance of a new thermal power unit by NTPC and the extension and improvement of the universal energy project by NLC India in Assam.

One of the reports published by Jansatta states that these decisions demonstrate the government's keen interest in regional development, clean energy, and strategic investment in underdeveloped regions under the PM-DevINE framework.

1. PM-DevINE Scheme Gets Expansion Nod

The Cabinet recommended a significant proposal to develop and expand the Prime Minister Development Initiative for North East (PM-DevINE). The project, which was initiated to support specific infrastructure development in the Northeastern states of India, now has a larger budget and fresh approval for projects.

The priority areas shall be connectivity on roads, health infrastructure, online access, and border state development, among others. The shift is likely to create jobs and lead to holistic growth in distant and deprived areas.

2. NTPC to Build Supercritical Thermal Unit in Singrauli

Under other significant decisions, the NTPC Limited has received a nod to establish a supercritical thermal power generation facility within its current plant in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh. The new unit would be 800 MW with cleaner and more efficient technology than the older thermal plants.

The shift will focus on energy security, providing more power as the industrial sector expands, and cutting outdated energy sources by switching to greener forms of energy.

3. NLC India’s Green Energy Push in Assam

The third important decision is the permission of a 300 MW solar plant by NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) in Assam. This is a component of the greater aspirations of India to attain 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

The project will contribute to decentralising the energy mix of the region, eliminating carbon emissions, and developing green jobs in the renewable energy sector.
