Unveiling PM Modi’s South Africa Visit; BRICS Summit Schedule, Itinerary and Highlights

BRICS Summit: Tuesday will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi depart for South Africa to attend the 15th BRICS meeting, which brings together the nations’ leading economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. August 22 to August 24 are the dates for the summit. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the BRICS Summit has been held virtually for the last three years. This year, however, will mark the first in-person summit. The tour commemorates the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between India and South Africa and will be PM Modi’s third visit to the country.

PM Modi’s Upcoming Visit to South Africa for the 15th BRICS Summit

In an official statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said, “I am visiting the Republic of South Africa from 22-24 August 2023 at the invitation Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, to attend the 15th BRICS Summit being held in Johannesburg under the South African Chairmanship. I also look forward to holding bilateral meetings with some of the Leaders present in Johannesburg.”

  • departure leaves Delhi at 7:10 a.m
  • Arrival at Waterkloof Air Force Base at 13:45
  • Arrival to Sandton Convention Centre at 15:55
  • BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue, 1600–1700 hours
  • Arrival to Summer Place at 1800 hours
  • President Ramaphosa will host a welcome dinner for the BRICS Leaders Retreat from 1800 to 2000 hours

PM Modi’s Unique Opportunity to Strengthen Ties with Greece

PM Modi will visit Greece after the conference; he would be the first Indian prime minister to do so in 40 years. “From South Africa, I will travel to Athens, Greece on 25 August 2023 at the invitation of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Greece PM. This will be my first visit to this ancient land. I have the honor to be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Greece after 40 years,” the statement added.  Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra gave more information about the trip of the Prime Minister, stating that “for the 15th BRICS Summit, a business delegation from India is also travelling to South Africa to attend the Business Tracks meetings as well as the meetings of the BRICS Business Council, BRICS Women Business Alliance, and the BRICS Business Forum.” PM Modi will also take part in a special gathering called “BRICS – Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue” after the BRICS Summit, which will also include additional countries invited by South Africa. In addition, PM Modi will meet alone with a few of the world leaders who are in Johannesburg.
