Interfaith marriage: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Uttarakhand cancelled his daughter’s wedding to a Muslim man after facing severe backlash from Hindutva outfits. The wedding was scheduled to take place on May 28.
According to information, Pauri municipal chairman Yashpal Benam, cancelled his daughter’s wedding after severe facing backlash from the masses. People were unhappy as his daughter was set to marry a Muslim man.
Social media reacts to wedding plan
A photo of the wedding card of the BJP leader's daughter took social media by storm. Within no time, both supporters and opponents of the BJP started criticising Benam.
Talking to reporters here, Yashpal Benam, said he had agreed to his daughter’s wish to marry a Muslim youth for her happiness. But after social media users reacted to the proposed marriage, he had postponed it, he said. "Now I have to listen to the voice of the public as well," Benam said.
The wedding that was to be held on May 28 in Pauri city, has now been cancelled, he said.
Benam’s effigy burnt
A crowd burnt the effigy of BJP leader Benam on Friday here at Jhanda Chawk in protest against his daughter marrying a Muslim.
The VHP, Bhairav Sena, and Bajrang Dal took part in the protest.
"We strongly oppose such a marriage," the working president of district VHP Dipak Gaud had said.
