In her maiden electoral rally, Sonia Gandhi, a former head of the Congress, attacked the BJP and asked people to support the Congress in the Assembly elections on May 10. She asserted that without putting an end to the climate of BJP loot and enmity, neither Karnataka nor the nation can advance.
In Hubballi, Sonia Gandhi campaigned for Jagadish Shettar, who switched from the BJP to the Congress after being denied an election ticket. Shettar left the BJP because it threatened him with losing the PM Modi's support if he didn't win the state.
"The fate of leaders is determined by the people. To stop the loot of the BJP, please vote for Congress on May 10 and give us a majority," At a rally in the Assembly district thought to be a BJP stronghold, she claimed.
Without putting an end to the BJP's theft and bigotry, neither Karnataka nor India can advance, she continued.
Sonia Gandhi reiterated the Congress's allegations of corruption against the BJP-led administration, "We have to free Karnataka of commission and corruption. Five years back, Congress did hard work in Karnataka. We are fulfilling all the promises made in Himachal Pradesh. I don't want to repeat our promises in Karnataka, but I want to assure you all promises will be fulfilled by Congress. We will give our hearts out to work for you."
"They don't answer your questions. They don't even care about Parliament. They think everything is in their pocket," she said.
The contest in Hubballi between Jagadish Shettar and Mahesh Tenginkai of the BJP has evolved into a prestigious contest for the in-power BJP and the Congress, both of which are throwing their full weight behind their candidates.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and AICC President M. Mallikarjun Kharge, who is from the state, have been actively campaigning in Karnataka, where the party is attempting to unseat the BJP.
