Himachal Pradesh assembly elections: Voting begins on a sluggish pace in HP for 68 Assembly seats

Himachal Pradesh assembly elections: Voting for the Himachal Pradesh elections began on Saturday at 8 am on a sluggish pace. Earlier, officials checked the EVMs after conducting a mock poll at all booths. As many as 412 candidates are contesting the polls from 68 constituencies.

The Election Commission has set up 7,881 polling stations. There are a total of 28.5 lakh male voters, 27 lakh women voters and 38 voters belonging to the third gender who will decide which party will form the government for the next five years. Kangra district has maximum Assembly seats at 15 and will prove crucial in deciding the direction of the elections.

More than 55 lakh voters are voting in the 68 assembly segments in Himachal Pradesh today as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged people to make new voting record.

High stake elections

In the high stake elections, incumbent BJP is troubled with multiple rebellions while the Congress is struggling with multiple CM faces and their respective lobby of supporters.

Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Electoral Officer Maneesh Garg said all arrangements are in place for the polling. “All 7,884 polling parties have reached the polling stations and set up the polling booths. They are accompanied by security forces. Nearly 50,000 polling staff and around 25,000 security staff have been deployed,” he said.

Security arrangements

About 30,000 security personnel including 67 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and over 11,500 state police personnel have been deployed for peaceful conduct of polling in Himachal Pradesh. About 50,000 government employees are on poll duty. Of the 7881 polling stations, 981 are critical and 901 have been categorised as vulnerable.

In Chask Bhatori of Bharmour Tribal AC of Chamba district, the polling party has to walk 14 km to reach the polling station.
