“We do not know how Danish Siddiqui died,” Taliban’s spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid

The Taliban has claimed that it does know how Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui was killed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and has expressed sadness for the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist’s death during confrontations between Taliban fighters and Afghan authorities.

“We are not aware during whose firing the journalist was killed. We do not know how he died,” Taliban’s spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid told CNN-News18 on Friday.

“Any journalist entering the war zone should inform us. We will take proper care of that particular individual,” Mujahid was quoted as saying by CNN-News18. “We are sorry for Indian journalist Danish Siddiqui’s death. We regret that journalists are entering war zone without intimation to us,” he added.

For over the last few days, Danish Siddiqui was covering the situation in Afghanistan’s Kandahar amid heightened tension in the area. He had tagged along with the Afghan Special Forces on some missions, he informed via a tweet.

Danish Siddiqui’s last story was about a mission in which Afghan commandos were trying to extract a wounded policeman trapped by Taliban insurgents on the outskirts of Kandahar.
