Weather Update: A coludburst occured in a village in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun district in the early hours of Saturday, amid heavy rain in the area. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team rushed to the spot after residents in Sarkhet village reported the cloudburst at 2:45 am.
SDRF said all the trapped villagers were rescued while some took shelter in a nearby hotel.
Elsewhere in nation, parts of Odisha still suffering from terribal floods, and the situation still terrible as a result of the torrential rain followed by the low pressure and consequent depression.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted wide spread light or mild showers with rainstorms over Uttarakhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh on August 19 & 20, and Himachal Pradesh and western Uttar Pradesh over the weekend.
Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab are also expected to receive mild spells of rain on Saturday. Eastern Rajasthan may also experience rain shower from August 20–22, and south Haryana on Sunday.
During this time, it may rain heavily in isolated areas of these states, and on Sunday and Monday, very heavy rains may also hit Rajisthan’s eastern pockets.
As a result, IMD has issued an orange alert for eastern Rajasthan and Uttarakhand form Saturday to Monday.

Thunderous Rain in Uttarakhand
The constant heavy downpours resulted in the rise in water level of Tamsa river flowing near Dehradun’s Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple. The connection between Tapkeshwar Mahadev and Mata Vaishno Devi Cave Yoga Temple was lost due to the alarming level of water in the river, reported an quoting the priest of Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple.
Due to the excessive rainfall, traffic was disrupted at many places on Totaghati and Teen Dhara on the National Highway to Badrinath shrine.
The Bhilangana, Nailchami, and Balganga rivers that flow through the Tehri district were in spate after the rain.
Following the Ganga’s breach of the danger level, low-lying areas of Haridwar were put on alert. The river was flowing at 293.70 metres, just below the he danger mark of 294 metres.
A 72-year-old woman was killed as torrential rain ravaged Yamkeshwar Block of Pauri Garhwal district. Numerous houses were also damaged in the rain storm.
J&K Temporarily cancels the Vaishno Devi Yatra
The yatra to the Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir was temporarily suspended on Friday evening following intense rainfall, officials said.
Chief Executive Officer of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Anshul Garg said the situation was under control and there was no report of any fatal accident or damage.
Thunderstorm pounds hit Odisha
The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal caused heavy rain to fall in several locations in Odisha. According to an IMD statement, squally surface winds with maximum speeds of 55–65 kmph are anticipated in coastal areas and 30–40 kmph in the state’s interior districts.
According to the weather report, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Bhadrak districts are expected to have heavy to very severe rains.
Red alert in Jhanrkhand districts
The Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued a ‘red alert’ for parts of Jharkhand, where torrential rains is likely from Friday evening due to the impact of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, officials said.
Many areas of the state may have heavy to very heavy rainfall through Saturday, they said.
Schools closed in Himachal
Schools in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district will remain closed on Saturday due to constant rain, Deputy Commissioner Arindam Chaudhary said.
In view of constant rain in Mandi for the past more than two days and weather forecast of heavy rainfall in next 24 hours, it has been decided that all government and private educational institutions (except colleges and ITI) will remain closed on August 20, he said in the order issued on Friday evening.
