WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh says POCSO Act being misused: ‘Will force govt to change law’

Brij Bhushan Singh: Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Singh, booked under the POCSO Act, has alleged the law is being “misused on a large scale”. He said “we will force the government to change” it.

Singh was speaking at a meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich on Thursday. He was here to oversee preparations for a rally of seers called by him in Ayodhya on June 5.

Brij Bhushan Singh is a BJP MP from Kaiserganj in Gonda district. The WFI chief is in the eye of the storm for allegedly sexually harassing women wrestlers, including a minor.

Wrestlers protesting since April 23

Top grapplers of the country, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, have been protesting against Singh at Jantar Mantar in Delhi since April 23. They are demanding his arrest.

“This law is being misused against children, the elderly and seers. Even officials are not immune to its misuse,” the Kaiserganj MP claimed. “Under the leadership of seers, we will force the government to change the (POCSO) law,” he told news agencies.

Two FIRs registered

Delhi Police has registered two FIRs against the WFI chief. The first FIR pertains to sexual harassment allegations by a minor wrestler for which Singh has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The second FIR is related to outraging modesty.

Earlier this year when the wrestlers first protested against the WFI chief, the Sports Ministry formed an overnight committee  chaired by Mary Kom to probe the matter. However, a few months later, when no action was taken against the accused, the wrestlers went back to protesting.

After several other sports personalities raised their voices and backed the wrestlers, Delhi Police finally lodged two FIRs.

As of now, the Sports Ministry has stopped all activities of the wrestling federation.
