Kolkata Rape Murder Case: A war of words has erupted between journalist Ajit Anjum and TMC MP Mahua Moitra on social media. The fight began after Anjum, a journalist, asked questions about the shocking case of Rape and murder of a woman doctor in Bengal to Moitra. Her response—blocking Anjum on Twitter—has spawned arguments related to accountability and freedom of speech.
Journalist Ajit Anjum’s Public Discontent
A well-known journalist and former admirer of Mahua Moitra, Ajit Anjum, took to Twitter and expressed his anger after he got blocked. He then wrote, “As soon as I tagged with a question on the brutality with the doctor daughter of Bengal, Mahua Moitra blocked me. Wow Madam, wow. Every day you ask questions to Modi’s government with sharp attitude and when we asked a question to your government, you immediately blocked us.” Anjum’s frustration reflects what he feels as hypocrisy on the part of the TMC MP.
Anjum’s Critique of Moitra’s Response
In a series of tweets, Anjum took umbrage at Moitra’s response, stating she wasn’t serious about freedom of speech. Can’t you listen to a question? Do you only know how to ask? Do you only know how to preach on freedom of expression? A daughter has been brutalized in your rule and no questions were asked to you? Never mind, that’s why people say – hypocrisy also has its limits,” he said. Anjum’s remarks reflect a broader criticism of politicians, according to him, failing to address the critical issues once they are at the helm of affairs.
Controversial Death of a Female Doctor
The controversy erupted over the death of a 31-year-old female doctor at RG Kar Hospital and Medical College in Kolkata. Though initially, the case was termed a case of suicide, things took a grim turn after a post-mortem examination that showed severe injuries and even signs of sexual assault. According to the post-mortem report, a large amount of semen was found in the victim’s body, indicating multiple assailants. The Calcutta High Court has subsequently assigned the probe to the CBI, taking cognizance of the matter’s seriousness.
Anjum had earlier shared a video featuring the sufferings of the victim’s family, which raised the questions as to why prominent TMC leaders, including Moitra and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had not visited or talked about the plight of the victim’s family. He slammed them for their alleged apathy, saying, “Are you feeling the pain of this family? Shouldn’t you have gone to this family till now? Will the family have to cry like this after the brutality, rape and murder of a daughter in your rule? Shame on all of you. You people have no right to speak on the rape incident that happened in another state.”
