7th Pay Commission: Will 18 Months’ DA Arrears Finally be Disbursed? Check Details

Keep yourself updated on any changes that may affect the 7th Pay Commission's decision to pay government employees and pensioners' 18 months' worth of Dearness Allowance (DA) arrears.

7th Pay Commission: For the nation’s retirees and government workers, there is exciting news. There is now a chance that they will receive the Dearness Relief and Dearness Allowance that they were denied during the Covid-19 pandemic. Actually, a proposal in this regard has been received by the Finance Ministry.

Advocacy for Dearness Allowance

In light of this, a demand and recommendation have been made to give government workers and pensioners their dearness allowance back, which was stopped during the Covid-19 crisis, for a period of 18 months. If this is approved, there may be good news for retirees and government workers in the budget or shortly thereafter.

Bharatiya Pratiksha Mazdoor Sangh’s Letter to Finance Minister

Bharatiya Pratiksha Mazdoor Sangh has reportedly addressed Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman a letter to this effect, according to news reported in Economic Times. General Secretary Mukesh Singh of the labour union has asked the Central Government’s Finance Ministry to return the allowances, such as DA and DR, that were halted and suspended.

It can be argued that this recommendation was made under the presumption that the Modi administration at the Centre would be able to satisfy the need to win over millions of federal employees and retirees.

Suspension of Central Employees’ Dearness Relief Amidst Pandemic

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, central employees’ dearness relief and allowance payments were settled, or were suspended, for the 18 months between January 2020 and June 2021. Nevertheless, State Minister of Finance Pankaj Chaudhary had previously stated in a written response to the Parliament that it does not appear to be feasible to pay the DA/DR arrears for this period because of the difficult Covid period of the fiscal year 2020–21.

Anticipated Increase in Dearness Allowance for Central Employees

In an effort to win over central employees and retirees, it is anticipated that the Modi government will decide to raise dearness allowance and dearness relief in January and February. In fact, the Election Commission is anticipated to release the dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections around the first week of March. The nation will adopt the code of conduct at the announcement of election dates. The central government won’t be able to raise the dearness allowance after that.
