Aadhaar Fraud Alert

Aadhar Fraud Alert: Aadhaar, a critical identification document for Indian citizens, is increasingly targeted by fraudsters. Fraudsters are devising new ways to steal money from bank accounts by accessing Aadhaar details. One common scam involves accessing fingerprint data along with the Aadhaar number and the bank name, resulting in unauthorized transactions without receiving any SMS alerts. To safeguard yourself from falling victim to such scams, it’s essential to take proactive steps to protect your Aadhaar information.

Types of Aadhaar Fraud

  • Financial Fraud: Stealing money from bank accounts using stolen Aadhaar details and biometric data (like fingerprints) is a major concern.
  • Identity Theft: Using someone else’s Aadhaar number to impersonate them and gain access to benefits or services is another form of fraud.
  • Phishing: Fraudsters attempt to trick individuals into revealing personal information, including Aadhaar details, through emails, phone calls, or fake websites.

How to Secure Your Aadhaar Information

Locking your biometric data using the mAadhaar app or UIDAI website is a crucial step in safeguarding your Aadhaar details. Here’s how you can do it:

Locking Aadhaar Number:

  1. Send an SMS to 1947 with the message “GETOTP [Last 4 or 8 digits of Aadhaar number]”.
  2. Upon receiving the OTP, send another SMS to 1947 with the message “LOCKUID [Last 4 or 8 digits of Aadhaar number] [6-digit OTP]”.
  3. You will receive a confirmation message once your Aadhaar is locked.

Unlocking Aadhaar:

  1. To unlock, send an SMS to 1947 with the message “GETOTP [Last 6 or 10 digits of Virtual ID]”. (You can retrieve your Virtual ID from the UIDAI website)
  2. Once you receive the OTP, send another SMS to 1947 with the message “UNLOCKUID [Last 6 or 10 digits of Virtual ID] [6-digit OTP]”.
  3. You will receive a confirmation message upon successful unlocking.

By following these simple steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to Aadhaar-related frauds. Stay vigilant and take proactive measures to protect your Aadhaar information from unauthorized access.
