Attention Travellers! Air India Changes Luggage Rules, Check What’s New

Air India Cabin Baggage Policy Changes and New Delhi-Zurich Route Announced, Check Details

The cabin baggage policy of Air India, which is owned by the Tata Group, has been revised for domestic flights. by effect from May 2, the 20- and 25-kilogram baggage allowances for the “Comfort” and “Comfort Plus” fare families have been replaced by a 15-kilogram baggage allowance. This change is in line with Air India’s menu-based pricing structure, which was revealed in August of last year and accommodates a range of traveller requirements and tastes.

Introduction of Fare Families

Three unique fare families have been created by the airline: Comfort, Comfort Plus, and Flex. These cost families offer different features and tariff limits at different price points. Unlike the traditional one-size-fits-all paradigm, this new method lets passengers choose the fares that best fit their needs.

Baggage Allowances by Fare Family

  • Comfort: A 15-kilogram cabin luggage allowance is now available to travellers in this category.
  • Comfort Plus: This fare family’s cabin luggage allowance has been lowered to 15 kg.
  • Flex: A larger 25-kilogram cabin baggage allowance is included with this fare.

Business Class Baggage Allowance

Depending on the tariff category chosen, Business Class passengers on domestic flights are entitled to baggage allowances ranging from 25 to 35 kilogrammes.

International Flight Baggage Policies

The amount of luggage allowed on foreign flights varies depending on the destination.

Purpose of Fare Families

Air India adopted pricing families in response to customer input and thorough market analysis. This calculated action enables travellers to select fares that suit their requirements and tastes.

Price Differentiation

For example, on well-traveled domestic routes like Delhi-Mumbai, the price difference between ‘Comfort Plus’ and ‘Flex’ flights can be approximately ₹1,000, with the ‘Flex’ cost offering further features like extra baggage allowance and flexibility in change or cancellation without fees.

Air India’s Expansion Plans

Air India is being managed by the Tata Group and is now expanding its global reach. Air India recently announced that it will begin offering direct flights from Delhi to Zurich on June 16. Boeing 787 aircraft will operate four days a week, with Business Class and Economy Class options.
