In a significant move, Punjab has identified 35 lakh individuals aged 70 and above for enrollment under the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojana, a cashless universal health insurance scheme. The central government has expanded the scope of the scheme, ensuring that senior citizens aged 70 or above are eligible for free medical treatment worth up to Rs 5 lakh annually, regardless of their economic status.
Rising Elderly Population in Punjab
Punjab has seen a substantial increase in its elderly population between 2011 and 2024, surpassing the national average. The proportion of senior citizens in the state rose from 10.3% in 2011 to 12.6% in 2024, making it the state with the sixth-highest elderly population in India. Despite this growing demographic, the proportion of senior citizens covered under health insurance in the state remains low. According to data from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), only about 4% of senior citizens in Punjab have health insurance.
Improved Access to Healthcare for Vulnerable Seniors
The elderly population in Punjab is highly vulnerable, often facing financial challenges that hinder their access to quality healthcare. Many seniors lack financial independence, making them reliant on government assistance. By expanding the Ayushman Bharat scheme to include this age group, the government aims to alleviate out-of-pocket expenses for senior citizens and improve their access to public healthcare facilities. This move is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the health and well-being of the elderly, providing them with much-needed financial relief and medical support.
