The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government’s health card scheme has once again proved to be a lifeline for the underprivileged, enabling free and timely treatment for a needy elderly patient in Gurdaspur district.
Bhagwant Mann Government’s Health Card Ensures Free Treatment
Sharing the details, AAP MLA and Punjab’s chief spokesperson Kuldeep Singh said that Sulakhan Singh, a resident of Gurdas Nangal village in Gurdaspur, belongs to a financially weak family and was suffering from a serious heart ailment. Doctors had estimated the cost of treatment, including stent and medicines, to be between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹3 lakh, an amount the family was incapable of arranging.

Kuldeep Singh said that under the health card provided by the Mann government, the entire treatment was provided completely free of cost, including the heart stent procedure and post-treatment medicines. “This health card did not just cover expenses—it saved a life,” he said.
Highlighting the intent behind the scheme, he stated that the Mann government is committed to ensuring that no citizen is denied treatment due to lack of money. The health card scheme has been designed to offer comprehensive medical coverage to economically weaker sections, senior citizens, and vulnerable families across Punjab.
Local residents and the patient’s family expressed gratitude to the Punjab government, stating that without this support, arranging such a large amount in an emergency would have been impossible. They said the scheme has brought a sense of security to poor households who often delay or avoid treatment due to financial constraints.
Health experts note that timely access to cardiac care is critical, and schemes like this play a crucial role in reducing preventable deaths. The incident is being seen as a reflection of the state government’s focus on strengthening public healthcare and making it accessible to all.
The AAP government has repeatedly maintained that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and cases like this underline how policy-level decisions are making a tangible difference on the ground.
