BIG Breaking! Jagdeep Dhankar Resigns As Vice President Of India. Check How Many VPs Have Resigned Till Now In India

On Monday, the unexpected announcement was made by Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Rajya Sabha chairperson, who said he will cease to be in his position. He did not refer to any epic political struggle, but cited the necessity to prioritise his health and to withdraw as a public official. He immediately resigned.

A Rare Occurrence in Indian History

It is not only a shock that Jagdeep Dhankhar is resigning, but it is a historic move. In the 75+ years of Indian democratic experience, he is the third occupant of the vice president post to renounce the position halfway through the term.

Who then are the other two?

  • V. V. Giri (1969): Giri resigned and participated as a candidate in the Presidential election following the sudden demise of President Zakir Husain. He even had a brief run as Acting President and resigned.
  • Bhairon Singh and Shekhawat (2007): He stepped down when he lost in the Presidential race to Pratibha Patil.
  • Jagdeep Dhankhar (2025): Jagdeep Dhankhar is now the third Vice President in the history of India, who resigned in the middle term, not because of politics but because of his health concerns.

What Happens Now?

With the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the nation is now in a transition to the election of a new Vice President, which the constitution requires to be elected within six months. The Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is expected to manage the work in the Upper House till then.

Public & Political Response

Although it is an individual decision, the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar has caused a ripple effect within political circles. His assertive and non-partisan handling of his duties as Rajya Sabha Chairman was also welcomed by many, particularly in hot sessions.
