Broiler Vs Desi Chicken: For decades, chicken lovers across the world are confused whether to choose Broiler or desi (country) chicken. Several chicken lovers and health experts have claimed that broiler chicken is slightly ahead of desi chicken in terms of protein content but desi chicken wins hands down on micronutrients and leanness.
Broiler Vs Desi Chicken-Which Is Better And Why?
If you compare both in terms of grams of protein, broiler chicken is a better option than desi chicken. This is simply because broiler chicken offers approximately 29-31 grams of protein per 100 grams with around 150-160 calories and low fat. A general 100-gram serving of cooked broiler meat (mixed pieces) offers around 30 grams of protein, which makes it one of the densest animal protein sources in the Indian diet.
DON'T MISS
In contrast, desi chicken is more active and lean. This means it has less intramuscular fat and slightly less water in the meat. Desi chicken offers approximately 27-29 of protein per 100 grams.
The Clear Winner?
Broiler Chicken is usually about hormones and antibiotics that could be harmful to public health. On the other hand, desi chicken from trusted local markets or small farms is more natural and cleaner. Free-range, naturally foraging desi birds tend to have better omega-3 and antioxidant profiles, which are linked to heart and brain health. Also, their meat is generally chewier and more fibrous, which can increase satiety.
However, slaughter conditions such as hygiene play an important role before you choose between broiler chicken or desi chicken.
Note: If you have heart disease, fatty liver or high cholesterol, you should opt for desi chicken (or skinless broiler breast) because of better fat quality and lower overall fat, as long as it is well cleaned and not fried.
