CM Yogi Adityanath Hails UNESCO Recognition of Diwali, Calls It a Moment of Pride for Uttar Pradesh and Sanatan Culture

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday described UNESCO’s decision to include Diwali in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a historic and proud moment for the state and for Sanatan culture across the world. Addressing the people of Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Minister said the recognition honours not just the festival of lights but also the deep cultural and spiritual traditions rooted in Indian civilisation.

CM Yogi said Diwali, one of the most divine and sacred festivals globally, symbolises the victory of light over darkness and righteousness over evil. He recalled that the festival traces its origins to Ayodhya, where the city was illuminated with lamps to welcome Lord Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman after their return. Inspired by this legacy, the Uttar Pradesh government has been organising the grand and divine Deepotsav in Ayodhya since 2017, which has now evolved into a global cultural celebration.

From Kashi and Mathura to Naimisharanya

Highlighting the broader cultural revival underway in the state, the Chief Minister said the last nine years have marked a sustained phase of renaissance that goes far beyond Deepotsav alone. He pointed to the construction of the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya after a wait of 500 years as a defining milestone. From Kashi and Mathura to Naimisharanya and Kalki Dham in Sambhal, he said, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a confluence of faith, development and heritage.

CM Yogi further underlined the comprehensive development of key spiritual and cultural centres, including Gorakhpur, Shringverpur Dham, Valmiki Ashram at Lalapur, Nishadraj’s sacred land and the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Kushinagar. These initiatives, he said, demonstrate that with devotion towards culture and heritage, transformative change is possible.

Referring to large-scale religious events, the Chief Minister said the successful organisation of the Mahakumbh and the smooth, secure conduct of the Kanwar Yatra reflect the government’s commitment to turning resolve into achievement. He added that preparations are now underway for the Magh Mela in Prayagraj, which will once again witness a grand confluence of faith, equality and folk culture.

Appealing to the people of the state, CM Yogi urged citizens to actively participate in this ongoing journey of cultural renaissance. He said the UNESCO recognition of Diwali is not an endpoint but a beginning, reaffirming Uttar Pradesh’s central role in preserving, celebrating and showcasing India’s timeless cultural heritage to the world.
