The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued rainfall in Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka for the next two days due to the influence of Cyclone Fengal, which has now weakened. Rain has been persistent in Bengaluru since Sunday evening, with Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka likely to experience widespread rainfall on Monday and light to moderate showers on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
Cyclone Fengal Weakens After Landfall
Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Puducherry on November 30, weakened into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area on Monday morning over North Interior Tamil Nadu, according to IMD. The remnant system is expected to emerge over the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea off the north Kerala-Karnataka coasts around December 3.
Rainfall Disruptions and Precautionary Measures
Heavy rains triggered by the cyclone have caused widespread disruptions. In Tamil Nadu, districts such as Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Krishnagiri have declared holidays for all schools and colleges on December 2. In contrast, Salem, Dharmapuri, and Tiruvannamalai, among others, have announced holidays only for schools.
In Puducherry, torrential rains caused by Cyclone Fengal led to flooded streets and evacuations, with the Army stepping in to assist stranded residents. Locals have noted that such severe weather has not been experienced in the region in the last three decades.
Weather Outlook for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu
IMD officials warn of further rain along the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu coasts. Residents are advised to stay alert to updates and avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas as weather conditions evolve.
