Data security incident: Many primary care services remained closed on Friday as security specialists tried to identify the scope of the issue and fix it after a cyberattack damaged hospital computer systems in several states, prompting some emergency rooms to close and ambulances to be redirected.
The emergency rooms at Manchester Memorial and Rockville General hospitals in Connecticut were closed for the majority of Thursday, and patients were transferred to other neighbouring hospitals.
Data security incident: From where it started
The "data security incident" started on Thursday at establishments run by Prospect Medical Holdings, a company with hospitals and clinics not just in California but also in Texas, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania.
Eastern Connecticut Health Network Chief Operating Officer Jillian Menzel said in a statement that "we have a national Prospect team working and evaluating the impact of the attack on all of the organisations."
Eastern Connecticut Health Network
According to the Eastern Connecticut Health Network, which manages the hospitals, elective procedures, outpatient appointments, blood drives, and other services were suspended. While the emergency rooms reopened late Thursday, many primary care services were shuttered on Friday. Individual contacts with patients were being made, according to the network's website.
Other locations throughout the system also reported experiencing similar disruptions. "Waterbury Hospital is following downtime procedures, including the use of paper records, until the situation is resolved," spokesperson Lauresha Xhihani said in a statement. "We are collaborating closely with IT security professionals to find a quick solution."
