Egg Stamping: From April 1, it would be mandatory for sellers of eggs to stamp each egg with its expiry date.

It would also be mandatory for egg sellers to carry the day on which they were laid. The Uttar Pradesh government announced that farmers and traders who don’t obey with this rule would have the option of either getting their produce destroyed or the eggs would be stamped ‘not fit for human consumption’, according to officers from the animal husbandry department.

Egg Stamping-Rules

Under the Food Safety & Drug Administration rules, eggs are considered safe to be consumed within 2 weeks of being laid if they are stored at favourable temperature conditions of approximately 30 degrees Celsius or within a period of 5 weeks if stored at a temperature of 2-8 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, eggs could not be stored with vegetables in cold storage as they require different temperatures.

Mukesh Meshram, Additional chief secretary, animal husbandry and dairy, commented that there are only 2 cold storages for eggs as of now in the state of Uttar Pradesh, one each in Jhansi and Agra. Meshram remarked that rules were not strictly followed in many cases.

Impact on Consumers, Farmers and Markets

For everyday buyers in the state, this would mean fresher eggs and fewer cases of food poisoning. The egg stamping process would be appreciated by health-conscious individuals as stamped eggs would make tracking of nutrition easy. Moreover, it would ensure that egg lovers would get peak protein without second thoughts.

However, farmers and traders dealing in eggs should need to invest in better storage and stamping tools at the earliest or risk huge losses. The egg stamping process would help follow stringent compliance checks that would ensure cleaner supply chains and trust-building.
