Born on June 23, 1934, the journey of Virbhadra Singh started as an MLA and he became the Chief Minister of the state six times. He was also the Minister of Small Industries and Steel in the UPA government. It is said that Virbhadra Singh wanted to become a professor and not a politician. But he stepped into politics and today he has an important stature in the politics of the state.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Congress veteran Virbhadra Singh was born in Sarahan, Shimla. Born on June 23, 1934, Virbhadra did his schooling in Shimla, after which he did his higher education from Delhi and earned a BA (Hons) degree.

Virbhadra Singh’s political career began in 1962 when he reached Parliament for the first time during the Lok Sabha elections. During this, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha for a record 7 times from Himachal Pradesh from 1962 to 2007.

Apart from 1962, he scored a hat-trick with victories in the Lok Sabha elections held in 1976 and 1971.

Virbhadra took charge of Himachal Pradesh as Chief Minister in 1983, 1990, 1993, 1998 and 2003. During the general elections held in 2009, he was once again elected as a member of the Lok Sabha and under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he was given the charge of the Union Steel Ministry on 31 May 2009.

Himachal Pradesh Congress Seva Dal President Anurag Sharma said that on June 23, a plantation will be done on the birthday of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. Plantation will be done at district and block level. He said that fodder would also be fed to the cows by going to the nearest cowshed.
