Inspirational Story: The rise of Kalpana Saroj is the ultimate rags to riches story of a woman who overcome hardships including domestic abuse, injustice, and even suicidal thoughts to become the CEO of a multibillion-dollar company. Women not just in this country but also around the world can take great inspiration from Kalpana's life.

Saroj's Journey as a Dalit Girl in Maharashtr

Saroj's life was comparable to that of any other Dalit youngster. She was born in 1961 in the Maharashtra town of Roparkheda, which is close to Akola. At twelve years old, she was married off after being bullied at school. Back then, according to Saroj, it was the parents' responsibility to arrange the marriage of their daughter; women were expected to care for the family, the kids, and the home. Similar to other girls from her background, Saroj started taking care of her house and her family. She moved to Mumbai with her 10-year-old spouse to reside there. She was forced to share a room with her husband's brother and his wife after being taken to a slum. The way her brother-in-law and his wife treated her was unpleasant. Both of them beat Saroj to a pulp. She became a broken person as a result of the physical and emotional assault.

The Painful Journey of Saroj Battling Oppression and Hopelessness

Her father was unable to recognise her when he met her six months after her wedding since the abuse had gotten worse. He brought her back with him and instructed her to start her studies. But going back to the mother's house for a daughter was not acceptable in their society. This situation also put her parents under stress. Along with her, society harassed her parents. The idea of a married girl visiting her parents was strongly discouraged. She attempted suicide at age 16 by ingesting three pesticide bottles due to the excruciating misery and conditions.

Saroj's Journey of Resilience and Entrepreneurial Spirit

However, the cosmos had other plans for her, and Saroj was just in time saved by her aunt. After this occurrence, Saroj's outlook changed and she began to appreciate life more. Instead of being intimidated by the villagers' harsh words, she decided to rise above the situation because she wanted to live. To help support her family, she relocated back to Mumbai to live with her uncle and began working in a clothing factory. With her keen business sense, she quickly obtained a Rs. 50,000 loan, acquired a sewing machine to start a tailoring company, and also made an attempt to establish a furniture store. Kalpana even started a film production company and produced the commercial movie Khairlanjichya Mathyawar on the struggles and injustices a Dalit family endured in Khairlanji, Maharashtra. She wanted to make the rest of the world aware of the story and raise awareness about how Dalits are still treated today. The movie was dubbed in Telugu, Hindi, and English. Kalpana added that the issue will never be resolved if the culprits are not brought to justice and awareness is not increased.

Saroj's Remarkable Turnaround of Kamani Tubes

She immediately established a real estate business and eventually joined the board of Kamani Tubes, a metal engineering company. She took over when it became bankrupt as a result of its significant debt. She turned it around and made it into a successful enterprise. Her efforts and services to her areas earned her recognition, and in 2013 she was given the honour of being named a Padma Shri. Saroj is adamant that technology has revolutionised the world. The government now offers assistance to people from all walks of life, and girls now have new chances that weren't available in the past. She continued by saying that the women needed to be properly trained and shouldn't be allowed to give up when things become tough.
